phood is good...
phood made from a fantastic restaurant is better.
So I haven’t written anything in a really long time. But I thought I might write a little blurb right now.
Last Tuesday, I went to a restaurant with ‘the gang’ in Georgetown. It’s called Filomena’s and let me tell you….fantasimigorical. I hope that link works, first time trying it. First of all it’s a cute place where they make all the pasta fresh and decorate like crazy for whatever season is around. Halloween decorations were everywhere. Very cool. But let’s talk about the PHOOD.
This is what we ordered…me and the boys:
Sfogliatina drool
Calamari Fritti (exceptionally good although it’s just fried calamari)
Then for whatever reason, the boys all got the same thing Tonno Grigliato con Spinaci e Cipolline and I got the Costoletta di Vitello alla Parmigiana. Let me tell you. The veal was crazy big. Seriously, they brought out an oval plate that was like 12 inches long and 8 inches wide. The veal basically filled the whole plate…it could feed 4 people, I swear. And let me tell you…it was soooo good. Even reheated!
The moral of the story is…next time you all want to have some Italian and want to trek on down to Georgetown, we’re SO going there.
My lunch today
I make this chicken for me and Thuha because we are trying to be good and bring our lunch to work more. And it’s easy to just cook up some chicken thighs, wrap them and nuke them at work. This is what I make:
I rinse/wash the chicken and then dry them. Then I use this marinade called Sesame Ginger (I forget who makes it, sorry!) and it’s one of those 30 minute marinades. And then I add a little bit of soy sauce, a little bit of sesame oil, sesame seeds, and then garlic…we love garlic so I think I use like 2 heaping spoonfuls of already minced garlic. :) So anyway…I cook those, wrap them up individually in foil and then put them in sammich bags so we can take them to work.
Well today I had the idea that we should not only take our chicken but eat our chicken in a tortilla! So yeah, I had this like Asian/Mexican sammich for lunch today. Not bad…missing something, can’t put my finger on it. I was thinking maybe some rice would have been good…but hmm. Well I guess I’ll keep experimenting.
ALSO if you guys like Wheat Thins…you must try the new flavor that they have…it’s called Sun Dried Tomato Basil. It’s crazy bursting with flavor…like a mix of pizza Combos and cool ranch Doritoes or something. That’s how my friend described them. All I know is that I like them a lot :) hehehe
Las Vegas Hole in the Wall places
I don’t know if you know but I LOVE grease. I LOVE hole in the wall places where the food is cheap and it’s GOOD.
So we went to Vegas for President’s Day weekend and the resort told us to try this place called Ellis Island. Yeah the place is a DUMP. But boy, the FOOD…excellent and soooo reasonably priced…
Well the main reason I write is because I had what they called a Frisco burger. It’s a 1/3 (1/2?) pound burger with swiss, bacon, grilled onions, and Thousand Island dressing…on sourdough bread slices. And then GRILLED like a grilled cheese so the bread is all golden and crispy… OMG I thought I was going to die of either a heartattack or just from the pure bliss of the grease ;)
So maybe this isn’t the right kind of phood post but umm…I had to share it’s YUMMINESS. Especially because not only did I have it the first day, but my mom and Thuha had it the second day, and then Thuha and I had it the third day. Too hilarious.
Yummy Salad
So as my introductory entry, it has been “hinted” that I should post favorite recipes :) This is the recipe, as given to me from my cousin…Lex and MJ have tasted and can vouch for if it’s good :D I personally LOVE it and it started my openness to salads with fruit and nuts in them…add a little meat and cheese and I love the salad…but this isn’t one of those meat and cheese salads….errr, I digress.
SPINACH CASHEW RAISIN SALAD
Ingredients:
Salad Greens (the recipe originally called for spinach, but we like the Spring Mix better)
Cashews (Buy cashew halves. Use half can or more)
2 Granny Smith Apples (peeled)
Golden Raisins (I think I usually buy the “big” box and use half – 3/4 of it)
Lemon Juice
Dressing (Goes a long way):
1/2 cup Canola Oil
4 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar
4 Tablespoon Sugar
1 teaspoon Salt
1 drop Tabasco
Fresh Pepper
I usually buy three to four “salad bags” – a mixture of various greens vice just spinach. Use what you like!
Soak the golden raisins in warm water for 5-10 minutes, then drain.
Cube the apples. Toss in lemon juice so they won’t turn brown, drain.
Also, for “effect” I usually layer everything ~ lettuce, apples, raisins, cashews. Have the dressing in a water bottle or something like that and pour on right before tossing at the party. It does not keep well overnight once mixed with dressing.
As for “how many people” it serves, usually it is one of a few to many sides. But when I make it I usually use a huge bowl ~ I usually figure on 12-15 folks.
